CULTURE AND IDEOLOGY AT AN INVENTED PLACE.

CulturePinggong[Book: Zhang Pinggong – 2007 – 15x22cm – 250 Pages – Few B&W photos]. The theme park is an extraordinary cultural landscape and extraordinary cultural experience. Academic analysis of theme parks has grown and diversified, as have the parks themselves, so we have the luxury of many and varied “variations on a theme park” to help us think about them. Too often an easy target for dismissive cultural critique, its landscape labelled as a simulacrum, its visitors as bearers of false consciousness as they explore cultural dupes. However, we need to move beyond such a dead-end approach as we explore China’s best theme park, Overseas Chinese Town. Theme parks are incredible lenses to explore issues such as national and cultural identity, popular culture, globalisation, mediatisation, and post modernisation. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.
