dvd_themonorail[DVD: Theme Parkology – 2013 – 44 mins]. In 1958 while vacationing in Cologne, Germany, Walt Disney discovered a Monorail smoothly travelling along a steel-reinforced concrete beam. He loved the idea so much that he knew he had to have one built into his new theme park: Disneyland (Anaheim, California). Speed into the future aboard ‘The Highway in the Sky’ as we tour the rails of the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, from its sketched beginnings to its 1959 unveiling, to today’s colourful Monorail. This documented wonderment would not be complete without an interview with Imagineer Bob Gurr, who not only designed this futuristic mode of transportation, but also built it. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Fifteen minutes of this programme is taken up with a blurry ride-through and POV ride-through of the Disneyland Monorail system, which I didn’t enjoy. Of much more interest to me was the information about the Alweg Monorail’s roots in Germany and the unique historical insight from Bob Gurr. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.
