ForestParkIoA[Book: Doug Garner – 2007 – 16x23cm – 130 Pages – Many B&W photos]. Forest Park Highlands was once St. Louis (Missouri) largest and best-known amusement park. In its earliest years, the Highlands boasted a fine theatre and one of the largest public swimming pools in the United States. Roller coasters are the lifeline of every good amusement park, and the Highlands always had two. The end came in a spectacular fire that decimated almost the entire park on 19 July 1963. Only the Comet roller coaster, the Ferris wheel, the Dodgems, the Carousel, and the Aero Jets survived. This book covers other historic St. Louis amusement parks too: Suburban Gardens, West End Heights, Delmar Gardens, Westlake Park, Chain of Rocks Park, and Holiday Hill. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.

I loved this book. One of my favorite of the IOA amusement park series. Tons of great photos and information about this park that was once a St Louis staple just like the Cardinals. I enjoyed the multiple park maps at different stages of the park’s history as well as several aerial photos. Tons of photos about the amusement park rides and the coasters. When I read a book about an amusement park that is my main interest and not so much the gardens, the trees, fashion and a tons of writing. Great job Doug Garner on this one. I give it a 9/10.
