As seen through the eyes of children, you’ll hear about the fun and wonders found there over 70 years ago. ANDY SHINE SAYS: 90% of this comprises footage of interviewees and their living rooms rather than images of the park and its attractions. Rose Island had a wooden roller coaster and other amusement rides but no such rides are shown, only the picnic areas, steamboats, etc. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Poor / Fair.

DVD_RotonPoint[DVD: Cinestories / David Hogoboom – 2009 – 44 mins]. Narrated by Bob Becker. Trolley cars and paddle-wheel steamships brought thousands of daily visitors to Roton Point Park (Rowayton, Connecticut). They came to enjoy the beach, the roller coaster, the big-name bands and the bizarre vaudeville acts. Roton Point is a window on 130 years of American history, beginning as an amusement park in the 1880s and later as a beach resort. This programme vividly documents the music, the culture and the values of Americans coming to terms with a whimsically changing society. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Enjoyable and informative, although I longed for more amusement park images and rides information. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair.

ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.

DVD_BradyLakePark[DVD: Fred F. Endres – 2014 – 59 mins]. “Brady Lake Park (Ravenna, Ohio) opened in 1891 as a rustic resort in Northeast Ohio, catering to those who wanted to camp, fish, have a picnic and watch a ball game. Over the next half century, it became more of a traditional amusement park. By the time it closed, it had been operated by Spiritualists – who offered swimming, rides and séances – and by Cleveland racketeers, who turned it into a lucrative gambling emporium loaded with slot machines and high-stakes bingo games. In between, it was run by wheeler-dealers, who brought in top notch entertainment, from Gertrude Ederle to Guy Lombardo, Rudy Vallee and Cab Calloway. This is the fascinating story of the old park that, at one time, welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.” ANDY SHINE SAYS: This programme was originally broadcast on Western Reserve PBS in 2014. There is also an accompanying book by the same name. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good / Excellent.

Take a tour of this one-of-a-kind attraction, from make-up and prosthetics, stunts and shows, to themed walk-through attractions, and of course, the scares themselves! ANDY SHINE SAYS: Most enjoyable. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good / Excellent.

[Second feature: “Love Life & Laughter” 1934 – 81 mins]. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Only available on VHS until now, this B&W film features various scenes of the Pleasure Beach, Blackpool (Virginia Reel, Noah’s Ark, Flying Machines, Jack and Jill Slide, Fun House, Cuddle Up, (original) Big Dipper, Grotto, etc.). DVD_Slayground[DVD: Thorn EMI Films – 1983 – 85 mins]. Starring Peter Coyote, Mel Smith and Billie Whitelaw, Slayground is a story of savage revenge, relentless pursuit and cold-blooded murder. It’s also the story of a man named Stone, an armed robber with his own set of morals and ethics – no violence and no senseless killing. But when a routine robbery results in a young girl being accidentally killed, Stone finds himself in serious trouble when the dead girl’s father’s grief turns into an obsession for revenge. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Slayground features scenes recorded at Southport Pleasureland and Blackpool Pleasure Beach (England). With a climb of the Cyclone’s lift hill, a stakeout in the River Caves, a gun-fight inside the Derby Racer and murder inside the Alice in Wonderland ride, the 16 minutes of parks’ footage makes it worthy of inclusion here. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.

DVD_SpiritsOfTheCarnival[DVD: Paper Bark Films PTY LTD – 1995 – 58 mins]. People have always looked for ways to have fun. Sigmund Freud called it “The Pleasure Principal;” since 1912 Australians have called it ‘LUNAPARK.’ This is the story about the magic of amusement parks, and two men who built a city’s dream. Plagued by controversy, the dream of bringing pleasure to people was not easy. With each decade LUNA PARK (Sydney, Australia) had to compete with changing social values, advancing technology and the dream of a new age. Behind the smiling face lies a story of sweat, greed, competition and tragedy that very nearly destroyed the dream forever. ANDY SHINE SAYS: “Spirits of the Carnival: Luna Park – The Quest For Fun” tells a difficult and rather emotional story very well. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Excellent / Recommended.

[DVD: Samuel Goldwyn / Warner Bros Home Video – 1936 – 100 mins]. Ethel Merman reunites with her ‘Kid Millions’ co-star Eddie Cantor in this frothy bit of film fable from celebrated director Norman Taurog and legendary producer Samuel Goldwyn. Ol’ Banjo Eyes stars as meek Eddie Pink, who, thanks to a mail-order assertiveness course, ends up managing Dreamland amusement park which is beset by the mob. While doing his best to transform from milquetoast to manly, Eddie stymies the slot-machine gangsters while falling head over high-kicking heels for lovely chanteuse Joyce Lennox (Merman). In addition to Eddie’s antics – climaxing in a spectacular chase across the amusement park rides – viewers are treated to rousing renditions of toe-tapping favourites like ‘The Lady Dances,’ ‘First You Have Me High,’ ‘Calabash Pipe,’ and ‘Shake It Off With Rhythm.’ And that’s not to mention appearances by Parkyakarkus, William Frawley, Brian Donlevy and the always lovely Goldwyn Girls. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Features many fleeting shots of ‘Dreamland’ (real life Nu Pike Amusement Park in Long Beach, California) and the action escalates towards a rather awe-inspiring four-minute comedic stunt-laden chase over and aboard the Cyclone Racer roller coaster. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.

Part futuristic exhibition, part glittery strip mall, the 1964 New York World’s Fair was planned amid the optimism of the late 1950s, but the fair’s two-year run often mirrored the chaos of the 1960s. This presentation draws on the delightful memories of fair-goers who found a hope for the future, an understanding of other cultures, and a delicious Bel-Gem waffle for just a dollar. dvd_themonorail[DVD: Theme Parkology – 2013 – 44 mins]. In 1958 while vacationing in Cologne, Germany, Walt Disney discovered a Monorail smoothly travelling along a steel-reinforced concrete beam. Speed into the future aboard ‘The Highway in the Sky’ as we tour the rails of the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, from its sketched beginnings to its 1959 unveiling, to today’s colourful Monorail. This documented wonderment would not be complete without an interview with Imagineer Bob Gurr, who not only designed this futuristic mode of transportation, but also built it. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Fifteen minutes of this programme is taken up with a blurry ride-through and POV ride-through of the Disneyland Monorail system, which I didn’t enjoy. DVD_WorldsToughestFixes[DVD: National Geographic – 2010 – 50 mins]. At Holiday World (Santa Claus, Indiana) building the world’s longest water roller coaster – the Wildebeest – is like assembling an enormous 3-D jigsaw puzzle. The Wildebeest is fitted with magnetic motors that enable the carts to float on air. After assembling the towers, supporting platforms and track, some last minute troubles threaten the Wildebeest’s uphill climb. Will the Wildebeest be ready on time? ANDY SHINE SAYS: Maintenance of the Voyage roller coaster is used as a filler for what would otherwise be a much shorter programme. I thought the insight into magnetic levitation (MagLev) principles was interesting. Add a staged malfunction to introduce ‘tension,’ and voila! Another formulaic National Geographic programme. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.

DVD_RockyPointPark[DVD: Midway Pictures – 2007 – 81 mins +bonus disk]. A poignant film, by David Bettencourt, looking at one of New England’s great landmarks. You’ll see all the stalls and attractions, including the YoYo and the Flume, the Freefall and the Loop Corkscrew. A nostalgic look at the good ole’ days at Rocky Point Amusement Park (Warwick, Rhode Island). ANDY SHINE SAYS: I enjoyed this enormously. 81 minutes elapsed in a flash. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Excellent / Recommended.

DVD_Zipper[DVD: – 2012 – 76 mins]. Produced and directed by Amy Nicholson. A film about greed, politics, land use and public policy, ZIPPER tells the story behind the battle over an American cultural icon. Ride operator, Eddie Miranda, proudly runs a 38-year-old Zipper ride (Chance Rides) in Coney Island’s gritty amusement district. When his rented lot is bought by an opportunistic real estate mogul, Eddie and his ride become casualties of a power struggle between the developer and the City of New York over the future of the “People’s Playground.” Be it an affront to history or just the path of progress, the spirit of Coney Island is at stake. In a market-driven world where growth often trumps preservation, the Zipper may be only the beginning of what is lost. ANDY SHINE SAYS: A thought-provoking film with wonderful Coney Island footage, old and new. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good / Recommended.

DVD_Zombieland[DVD: Columbia Pictures – 2009 – 124 mins +bonus features]. “Nerdy college student Columbus has survived the plague that has turned mankind into flesh-devouring zombies.
