DVD_Freedomland[DVD: A Tootsie Production – 2008 – 83 mins]. This programme is especially for those who remember and love Freedomland (The Bronx, New York. 1960-1964). Often called the “Disneyland of the East,” Freedomland was shaped in the map of the United States. Its rides and attractions told America’s history in an entertaining way. This presentation features interviews with Freedomland’s creator: C.V. Wood, and with a number of former employees. Also includes video, photographs, and radio commercials, plus lots of information about the park. ANDY SHINE SAYS: A well-researched, absorbing documentary about a short-lived park. One of the greatest forms of entertainment at Frontier Village (San Jose, California) was the good ol’ fashioned gunfights that occurred on Main Street. Such heroic gunslingers as Wild Bill Kelsey and Marshall Ron fought to keep the Frontier streets clean from fearful outlaws. The gunslingers explain their various roles at Frontier Village and discuss their many experiences working at the park – accompanied with appropriate park images. DVD_Gorgo[DVD: VCI Entertainment – 1961 – 73 mins]. A salvage vessel is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the small town. Fishermen from England catch the “60 foot-tall deep-sea creature” and take it to London for Dorkins’ Circus and with great shock it is discovered that the creature (Gorgo) is only a baby. Gorgo’s mother who is drastically larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path. A celebration of places like Whalom Park in Massachusetts, Oaks Park in Oregon, Pennsylvania’s idyllic Idlewild and Ohio’s spectacular Cedar Point. It’s a fun trip from Lakeside to Lakemont and, of course, there are coasters, including the Thunderbolt at Kennywood, the Cyclone at Astroland, the Raven at Holiday World and San Diego’s Giant Dipper! Extras include: A look at long gone West View Park near Pittsburgh, stories about Olympia Park and Rainbow Gardens (McKeesport, Pennsylvania), with rare footage of Kennywood Park in 1941, and more! For more than 70 years, an amusement park in the hills of north-western New Jersey provided summertime fun for the young and the young at heart. The roar of the roller coaster, the magic of the carousel, the smell of popcorn in the air, and the sense that adventure was only as far away as the next ticket booth. For countless thousands, the place that had all this and more was Bertrand Island Amusement Park (Mount Arlington, New Jersey), on Lake Hopatcong. If you’ve ever been to this quaintly familiar amusement resort, tucked deep in the hills of western Pennsylvania, you know that it’s a place like no other. This delightful documentary captures the Conneaut Lake Park experience and, at the same time, spark a few old memories. This programme was completed by Michael Costello and Matthew Antonini for their senior project. Mike and Matt attended Riverside High School in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. This programme is donated to the historic preservation of one of America’s most beloved amusement parks – Conneaut Lake Park. ANDY SHINE SAYS: This documentary details the turbulent history of the park. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.


DVD_SeeYaAtTheRock-SavinRock[DVD: The Savin Rock Museum and the City of West Haven, CT – 2005 – 37 mins]. Savin Rock (West Haven, Connecticut). The name still resonates with a sense of excitement and wonder – echoes of an earlier time. Once commanding the West Haven shoreline, Savin Rock was the “Coney Island” of New England. “See Ya at The Rock!” is a nostalgic journey back to the sights and sounds of the amusement park and the memories that so many hold dear. Take one last grasp for the brass ring on the Flying Horses, one more ride on the Thunderbolt roller coaster, and enjoy one last stroll along the midway. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Features some impressive footage of the park and its rides. But I wish it was longer and more informative. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.


DVD_GwynnOakPark[DVD: Spicer Pro, LLC – 1974 – 5 mins]. Gwynn Oak Park (Woodlawn, Maryland) sat adjacent to the Gwynn Falls; the park met its demise in 1972 during Hurricane Agnes. It lay abandoned for a time and was eventually levelled; leaving an open area that exists today. The abandoned park was filmed in 1974 with additional scenes recorded at Hershey Park (Hershey, Pennsylvania). Interior scenes of the Roto Jets, Butterfly and Big Dipper are from 1963. ANDY SHINE SAYS: This colour film juxtaposes delighted patrons at Hershey Park, with the ghostly remains of Gwynn Oak Park, including: Gwynn Oak Park from the air, midway attractions, Funcade, “Welcome to Gwynn Oak” signage, Cafeteria, Play Golf, Rifleman’s Range, Baltimore and Ohio train, and the Big Dipper roller coaster +on ride footage. Located in Fort Mill, South Carolina, was once the #3 most visited theme park in America, attracting over six million visitors in the ’80s. Now years after the collapse of the PTL Ministry which owned the park, Heritage sits abandoned and rotting away. Take a tour of the grounds, and see the before-and-after pictures and footage of some of its buildings and attractions, including Heritage USA Water Park, the “Barn” auditorium, The Upper Room, King’s Castle, Heritage Inn, arcades and other rides and attractions as they look today. Hersheypark Sweet Memories is a vintage tour of the park, beginning with its opening in 1907 and told through archival film footage, historic photographs, home movies and first-hand accounts of those charmed by the carousel’s painted ponies and thrilled by the roller coasters’ wooden dips and climbs. Also includes slides, postcards, vintage ads, souvenirs, tickets, memorabilia, and on-board film footage. The film traces the changes and development of Idora Park over the years from its opening as “Terminal Park” in 1899 to its final days in 1984. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Features some nice footage aboard the coasters, although there’s very little narration, which is a shame. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world is Tokyo DisneySea. Featuring a nautical theme, this 176 acre theme park opened 4 September 2001 and is truly stunning, with its rides and seven different ports of call. This programme will entrench you in all the magic and adventure these two resorts have to offer. ANDY SHINE SAYS: The subject matter is most interesting; however, the programme is compromised significantly by terrible camerawork and lack of narration. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Poor.

It was there that Walt Disney created four new attractions for the world to view: the Ford Pavilion, the Carousel of Progress, the Illinois Pavilion and the ever charming “It’s a Small World”. The attraction would prove to be one of the world’s most enjoyable rides with dancing, colourful dolls from every country, and who could forget that memorable song written by the Sherman Brothers ♫ It’s A Small World (After All) ♫. Sail through the history of this ride and witness the changes that have occurred throughout the years, which include adding many Disney characters in Mary Blair’s fashion. This programme includes an interview with Disney legend Rolly Crump who talks in detail about this most loved Disney park attraction. And lots of good times! It’s a high-flying, double-dipped, screeching, squealing, scream-your-eyes-out documentary about one of America’s greatest amusement parks, Kennywood! (West Mifflin, Pennsylvania). Extras include: A compilation of vintage Kennywood television commercials; rare, unedited, black and white footage of the park in the twentieth century; and a Kodachrome movie of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company at Kennywood on 12 July 1941. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Produced and narrated by Rick Sebak, this is most entertaining and thoroughly absorbing. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Excellent / Recommended.

There’s a comical dolphin show, sing-along fun aboard a pirate ship full of treasure and for the finale, a spectacular fireworks show. The patriarch, 81 years-old Heinz Distel was even born in a car beside the roundabouts of his parents. Sons Eugen and Heiner and oldest daughter Gabi, operate the rides. When Heinz walks the fair, he meets familiar showmen from past times – and no ride seems unknown to him. The Autoscooter remains popular thanks to the Distels’ inventions, and they keep up to speed with the public’s expectations. Meeting safety requirements is par for the course, and it’s not all fun. This programme follows three generations of the Distels and the bustle in their life (German narration). ANDY SHINE SAYS: A revealing portrait of the travelling showman’s lifestyle. This DVD features extensive interviews with Perry and Waldameer owner Paul Nelson, who explain the original construction, upkeep and continued operation of these two classic attractions. [DVD: Blue Ridge PBS – 2016 – 60 mins +extras]. The sound of a roller coaster flying down the tracks, screams and squeals of delight, blinking lights and cotton candy. Those are but a few of the things that immediately come to mind when thinking about a visit to Lakeside Amusement Park (Salem, Virginia). It has been more than 30 years since Lakeside turned off the lights and closed the gates in October 1986, and yet many still remember their time there fondly. What began as a two million gallon pool in the 1920s eventually became an amusement park with a variety of rides and games along with concerts from the likes of Conway Twitty, Rick Nelson, Marty Robbins and other top country music stars. This documentary takes a look back at the park through the years with archival photos and footage. Also included are memories from those who worked there during the 1940s, members of the Roberts family who owned the park the longest, “Whispering” Bill Anderson who performed at the park several times, and others. ANDY SHINE SAYS: There’s plenty of input from those who part-owned Lakeside Park as well as from those who worked or visited there. There is a good balance of interviews and park footage. The three minutes of extras include Lakeside newspaper adverts and details concerning a UFO sighting over Lakeside Park. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good / Recommended.

Come Hell or high water, the city of New York is determined to revitalize the once glorious world capital of amusements. Meanwhile, a private developer has been purchasing every square foot of land he can get his hands on. The neighbourhood’s residents along with the millions who cherish Coney Island’s legacy are left wondering what will happen next. This film juxtaposes images of the past and present and features many of the key figures involved in this historic transformation.” ANDY SHINE SAYS: A poignant film. Although Riverview closed at the end of the 1967 season, it is still lovingly remembered by the citizens of Chicago. This DVD – an extended update of the VHS of the same name – traces the development of the park as seen through postcards, vintage advertisements, photographs taken by the park and motion pictures. ANDY SHINE SAYS: A most interesting and captivating film sure to appeal to all amusement park enthusiasts. Well presented and featuring rare footage of the park and its rides. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Excellent / Recommended.


DVD_LincolnParkRemembered[DVD: Spinner Publications – 1999 – 45 mins]. In its 93-year lifespan, Lincoln Park (North Dartmouth, Massachusetts) was so much more than an amusement park. It was a vibrant meeting place for many generations of residents in southeastern New England. From the clambake pavilion, to the roller-skating rink, to the sounds of the big bands in the great ballroom, Lincoln Park was a magical part of many lives. The film opens in 1920 as we board the coaster, carousel, swings and roundabouts. In 1950 we are afforded a tour through the park – from the walkway to the Fun House and the Penny Arcade. Footage from 1954 takes us on boat rides and airplanes, through concessions and games, and finally a heart-stopping ride on the roller coaster. ANDY SHINE SAYS: A wonderful programme capturing the fun and excitement of this long lost park. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.

When a seven-year-old boy is tricked into believing he killed his older brother, he gathers his meagre possessions and flees to New York’s nether wonderland: Coney Island. Upon and beneath the crowded boardwalk, Joey experiences a day and night filled with adventures and mysteries. This edition of Little Fugitive is the 80-minute version, and includes 5 minutes of extra footage not seen in the film’s original 1953 theatrical release. They must figure out how to meet the giant wave machine’s exacting standards. “HARD ROCK PARK” [2010] Engineers are building Hard Rock Park (South Carolina), a rock and roll theme park. Time is tight and challenges are plentiful. DVD_MegaSnake[DVD: Sci-Fi Channel – 2007 – 86 mins]. In 1986 East Tennessee, the father of Duff and Lester Daniels is killed by a snake’s bite during a cultish ceremony. Two decades later, Duff steals a rare and dangerous Unteka snake from dealer Screamin’ Hawk and takes it home. However, he accidentally drops the vessel the Unteka is kept in and it escapes, murders and grows exponentially. Now it is up to Les, Screamin’ Hawk and company to save the town from Mega Snake! (Language selection: Thai or English / Optional subtitles: Thai or English). ANDY SHINE SAYS: The final 15 minutes are set at the ‘East Tennessee County Fair’ which is, in fact, Sofia Land (Sofia, Bulgaria) which closed in 2006 before this film was released. CGI Mega Snake bites the heads from thrill seeking riders, etc. and wreaks havoc in a mock-shock manner. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair.


DVD_MegaStructures-UltimateRollerCoaster[DVD: National Geographic Channel – 2005 – 46 mins]. The Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure (Jackson, New Jersey) hits 128 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, shoots up a 90° incline and peaks 456 feet in the air. Find out what it takes to design and construct this world record-breaking ride. (Language is in Korean accompanied with optional Korean subtitling when English-speaking persons talk to camera). ANDY SHINE SAYS: an interesting programme and I was intrigued by the alternative designs featuring two hills after the tower. Altogether an okay programme, but we’re not afforded much of an insight beyond the weather hampering construction and the usual operational teething problems. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.


DVD_MemoriesOfOpryLand[DVD: Nashville Public Television – 2008 – 58 mins +extras]. “It’s A Thrill Ride of Great Memories!” Journey back to “The Home of American Music.” You’ll relive the rides and coasters, shows, and fun that made this park a fan favourite for 26 years! Includes interviews with cast members and performers, managers of the park etc… who reveal what made Opryland (Nashville, Tennessee) so special to them and to the millions of visitors, some of whom visited practically on a daily basis! With plenty of on-park footage, fascinating tales, loads of extras and optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired. “Memories of Opryland” is the next best thing to being there. ANDY SHINE SAYS: While the rides’ chapter is brief, it didn’t disappoint. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Excellent.

ANDY SHINE SAYS: The first programme features rare footage of Meyers Lake Park (Canton, Ohio). The second programme may only appeal to residents and enthusiasts of Stark County. Come back with us again to the glorious 1950s and 1960s when you were young and Meyers Lake Park was the place to be. Includes the 50-minute programme: ‘Amusement Park Memories’ which takes a nostalgic look at: Kennywood, West View Park, Willow Grove Park, Palisades Park, Idora Park, Meyers Lake Park, Coney Island Cincinnati and Coney Island New York. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Two enjoyable, well put together programmes. The second programme is marvellous, containing much archive footage of parks and rides long gone. [DVD: Theme Parkology – 2013 – 46 mins]. “When Disneyland (Anaheim, California) opened in July of 1955 Frontierland was limited in its rides, with only a riverboat tour and a few wagon trail rides. The following year, in 1956, a new attraction debuted: the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland. This thrilling ride travelled through the town of Rainbow Ridge, explored the arid terrain of a desert filled with humorous looking cactus, journeyed past nature’s wildlife, and chugged through colourful geysers and caverns. Sadly, this memorable Disneyland attraction closed in 1977 to make way for Big Thunder Mountain, but now you can mosey on down and explore the history of the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, which also features a fantastic interview with Disney legend, Bob Gurr.” ANDY SHINE SAYS: This programme made me realize what a thoroughly captivating and fun attraction the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland was. Some have criticised the time spent discussing the many Mountain Park theatre productions; however, I think the balance between this and the rides on the midway is about right. DVD_RememberingColumbiaGardens[DVD: Montana PBS – 1999 – 58 mins]. Family picnics, scary roller coaster rides, cracking the bar on the cowboy swings, and beautiful carousel horses. They’re all great memories of historic Columbia Gardens (Butte, Montana). This programme uses historical photographs, rare home movies and firsthand accounts about the history and myth of the beloved amusement park built by Copper King and former U.S. Senator William Clark. The park operated from 1899 to 1973. ANDY SHINE SAYS: An interesting look at a long lost park. There’s plenty of footage, and the programme discloses lots of fascinating facts and additional information. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.


DVD_ReturnToNorumbega[DVD: Remember Productions – 2005 – 50 mins]. This is the remarkable story of Norumbega Park (Newton, Massachusetts), and the Totem Pole Ballroom. In its heyday, the park was a prime recreational site for patrons of all ages. This presentation is the work of the late Bob Pollock, a Norumbega enthusiast who spent more than a decade documenting the park’s rich history. Come take a ride upon the Dentzel carousel, Ferris wheel, tumble bug, and circle swing. Enjoy a game of pinball in the penny arcade, and stroll around the zoo and gardens. Norumbega Park 1897-1963. Journey down Riverview Park’s (Chicago, Illinois) midway and experience The Bobs; Fireball; The Water Chutes and the Pair -O- Chutes! See The Silver Flash wooden roller coaster with its impressive enclosed cars and take a bumpy jaunt around The Flying Turns. The double Ferris Wheel; Bubble Bounce; Water Bug; Hot Rods and the Wild Mouse are all here waiting to be viewed again and again. Some great colour and B&W archive footage and a slide show are sure to re-ignite those most jaded memories. ANDY SHINE SAYS: A captivating production that certainly taught me a thing or two about a much missed park. Features professionally shot film aboard the Bobs. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.


DVD_RiverviewKingdomOfMagic[DVD: Kelleher, Russell, & Young – 1991 – 36 mins +bonus programme]. For 64 years from 1903 to 1967 on 72 acres of land in Chicago stood Riverview Park, the home to thrilling rides like the Bobs, the Fireball, the Shoot the Chutes and the Flying Turns, to name but a few. It was also home to more gentle rides and attractions, such as the Great Riverview Carousel and Aladdin’s Castle. In short, Riverview Park was a magical place and everyone from Chicago knew that and went there. On Labor Day in 1967, Riverview Park closed for the last time without fanfare. “Riverview Kingdom of Magic” was filmed by Clarence Hintze and George Berbert, it preserves those good times forever. Includes the 50-minute programme: ‘Amusement Park Memories’ which takes a nostalgic look at: Kennywood, West View Park, Willow Grove Park, Palisades Park, Idora Park, Meyers Lake Park, Coney Island Cincinnati and Coney Island New York. dvd_rockettothemoon-flyingsaucers[DVD: Theme Parkology – 2013 – 57 mins]. 3, 2, 1… Blast Off! In July of 1955, Disneyland (Anaheim, California) unveiled a new attraction in Tomorrowland: The Rocket to the Moon. This exciting ride took guests on a simulated journey through space towards their lunar destination! In 1961, another attraction opened its space ports in Tomorrowland. The Flying Saucers allowed guests to hover and manoeuvre across a metal floor in their own two-seat spacecraft! This double feature explores the history of both attractions. ANDY SHINE SAYS: I enjoyed these programmes, but fast-forwarded through the lengthy on-ride portion of the Rocket to the Moon (total length 31-mins). The Rocket to the Moon attraction was clearly much more fun to experience first-hand than to watch on television some 60-years later. The Flying Saucers programme (total length 26-mins) features Disney Imagineer, Bob Gurr, who shares his unique insight. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.


DVD_RockyGlenPark[DVD: Pippin Pictures – 2009 – 61 mins +extras]. “Rocky Glen Park” (Moosic, Pennsylvania) features more than 20 interviews connected to the amusement park, including descendents, former owners, employees and park visitors. The documentary also includes video footage from the 1930s through to the 1980s, including rare scenes of the Laurel Line, famed ‘Million Dollar Roller Coaster’ and the ‘Duck Boat.’ Bonus material includes roller coaster footage and the Rocky Glen historical marker dedication ceremony. ANDY SHINE SAYS: I’d have preferred more on-park footage (Perhaps it doesn’t exist?). Still, it was a nice enough programme. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Fair / Good.


DVD_RockyMountainLegacy[DVD: Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting Network, Inc. – 1995 – 57 mins]. For over a century, Elitch Gardens (Denver, Colorado) was considered one of America’s most unique amusement parks. It was the site of Denver’s first zoo, home to America’s oldest summer stock theatre and had one of the country’s greatest ballrooms, the Trocadero. Turn-of-the-century motion picture film, archival photographs, and interviews celebrate the lasting legacy of Elitch Gardens. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Four chapters detail the history of John and Mary Elitch’s park: “The Gardens,” “The Theatre,” “The Ballroom” and “The Park,” including the many attractions through the years, up to 1995 when old Elitch Gardens closed. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good / Recommended.


DVD_RollerCoaster1977[DVD: Universal City Studios – 1977 – 119 mins]. A determined terrorist begins to turn America’s amusement parks into battlefields. Tension mounts as affable safety inspector George Segal attempts to track down the saboteur (Timothy Bottoms) who has targeted the country’s most popular roller coaster, and its riders, for senseless destruction. The edge-of-your-seat excitement mounts as the battle of wits between Segal and Bottoms builds to an explosive climax. This widescreen presentation also has cast and film-maker’s biographies, film highlights, theatrical trailer and production notes. Carries optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired. ANDY SHINE SAYS: Filmed on location at Ocean View Park, Kings Dominion and Magic Mountain, and featuring footage of the rides and coasters, including: Rocket, Rebel Yell and The Great American Revolution. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.


DVD_RollerCoaster1999[DVD: Rollercoaster Productions, Inc. – 1999 – 87 mins]. Five troubled teenagers choose a bankrupt amusement park to pursue a dark fantasy. The angst-ridden youths exact revenge on the security guard and lock him into a Chance Zipper ride and subject him to an extended spin…! They enjoy exploring and riding the attractions, but their gaiety is short-lived, however. In their midst, a darker purpose lurks: a suicide pact confronts them with a choice between death and their tortured lives. ANDY SHINE SAYS: The entire movie is set at defunct “Vancouver WonderWorld” (in fact, still operating Playland in Vancouver, Canada). Many rides are featured, including the Wild Mouse, Corkscrew, and a precarious track-walk of the woodie. ANDY SHINE’S RATING: Good.
